Master Club Fitting 101 – “What Type of Ball Flight Do You Want to See?”

ERG Golf recently received an email from one of our Master Club Fitters reporting a customer could not understand the difference in choosing between the two different lofts presented to him during a custom fitting.  With my years of experience and conversations with other Master Club Fitters, I found the best way to determine why a player should use one loft over another is the following:

Which Loft is Right For You

A starting point to determine the correct iron loft, I place the golfer into one of two categories. The first category is the player who has a shallow swing path and takes a small divot or in some cases no divot at all.  The second category is the player who has a steep descending swing path, delofting his irons which creates a deeper and larger divot.  It would make sense to start the category one player using a lower lofted set of irons and the category two player using a higher lofted set of irons.  Both of these options are on the right path to achieve an optimal ball flight.

Key Golf Club Fitting Factors

With that stated, any Master Club Fitter will tell you custom club fitting it is not that simple. There are several factors and exceptions to be considered in the two categories mentioned above.  Some of the major factors to be considered are:

a.) The players clubhead speed.

b.) The players natural ball flight and swing path. (draw/fade) and (high/low).

c.) The players level of ability.

d.) The Swing weight and feel of the irons the player prefers – Ask the player, what is the favorite iron in their bag.  Most players like Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus had one iron in their bag for some reason felt better than the rest.  Measure the swing weight, overall weight and flex to get a better understanding on what your player prefers.

e.) Last, but not least, ask the player, “What type of ball flight do you want to see?”.

The question, What type of ball flight do you want to see?” is the most important question and at times overlooked during the fitting process.  If the customer likes to hit a high draw and leaves a fitting with a set of irons that produces a low draw or fade, chances are they are not coming back or recommending your service to other golfers.  Explain why you are suggesting a certain style of iron with a specific loft is to help them achieve their desired ball flight.

ERG Golf has gone to great lengths to develop our 2019 product line designed expressly for the needs of custom club builders.  ERG Golf offers over 9 styles of irons with 5 different loft options to choose from. Club fitters need these options available so they can conduct their custom fitting with confidence knowing they have the right product and the right fit for each player.  The ERG Golf product line allows […]

A Diamond in the Rough

As a small growing golf brand, it excited us when folks discovered us at the PGA show back in January.

Golf writer Alexander Toth of the blog Until the Next Tee, debated visiting Eagle Rebirth Golf prior to the show, but was thrilled he took the time to make some swings with our products.

From our drivers to our fairway woods, Eagle Rebirth Golf made the Top 5 in the categories Top Hybrid, Top Forged Iron, and Top Wedge in his 2nd Annual Teezy Awards.

Not only did Eagle Rebirth Golf rank in his Teezy Awards, Toth also selected us for his Hidden Gem Award for 2019. It is an award we are appreciative of especially with the number of new products and innovations released this season.

Eagle Rebirth Golf – It just seems like every year that I attend the PGA Merchandise Show there’s almost always a “Hidden  Gem” that I uncover. Even though it’s a new category in 2019 this award would have definitely gone to New Level Golf last year. For 2019, that honor goes to Eagle Rebirth Golf. If you haven’t heard of them you aren’t alone. I honestly feel that if I were to survey 100 golfers I’m not certain that 10 would have heard of them before. I’m hoping that changes.

Eagle Rebirth Golf is the manufacturer of several designs of metalwoods, irons, and wedges. Their irons and wedges are forged from either 8620 or 1025 Carbon Steel and they feel great!!! They even have an iron that features a thin 455 maraging steel face and a 1025 steel forged body (X2). Their W5 was a nominee in the Top Wedge Category and this wedge felt great. I loved the meticulous milling of the face… including the toe.

Their metalwoods performed very well from top to bottom. Whether it was their forgiving V1 hybrid (455 maraging steel face) or their X1-Ti fairway metal head (which features a DAT55G forged titanium cup-face insert). Their heads provided plenty of jump off of the face. Their drivers performed very well as well.

I debated back and forth about visiting with Eagle Rebirth Golf prior to the PGA Show. Admittedly, I wasn’t captivated after looking at their website. Let me tell you this… I’m glad that I took the time to make swings with their products.

Perseverance sure pays off.

We added irons, re-imagined our drivers, conceived fairway woods, developed wedges and envisioned hybrids that will make your heart skip a beat.

The response at the PGA Merchandise Show was overwhelmingly positive. We are grateful for all those who came to our booth and gave us a shot, a shout, and a shake.

We look forward to the changing the golf game with our high performance clubs. Here is to a great season!
